Materials: Colored chalk, yardstick, sidewalk
Lesson Time: 1 hour
Objective: Students will work together to draw a model of the
solar system on a sidewalk at school.
Procedure:
1. Draw a yellow chalk mark to represent the sun and label it.
2. Measure 1 1/ 2 inches from the sun with a yardstick. Mark
and label Mercury at this point with another color.
3. Continue measuring and marking as follows:
Venus 3 inches from the sun
Earth 4 1/2 inches from the sun
Mars 7 in. from the sun
Jupiter 2 feet from the sun
Saturn 3 feet, 8 inches from the sun
Uranus 7 feet, 5 inches from the sun
Neptune 11 feet, 7 inches from the sun
Pluto 15 feet, 3 inches from the sun
Calculations are based on: 1 inch = 20 million miles.
Use different colors to make the planets more noticible,
students can color planets after they are finished marking them.
